Folk/Irish band auditions!

The Merry Wives of Windsor are still seeking an alto! We are an all female group who play folk and Irish music at Renaissance Faires and cultural festivals year round. We also play larger shows a few times a year, past venues have included the Grove of Anaheim and the El Rey in LA.

Sight read OR learn music quickly

Tuva Camp 2008

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

I heard a song off the new Dar Williams album (Echo?) today on the radio and now I cannot wait. My understanding is that the album comes out in September. Also Erin McKeown has a new album out right now which, from what I've heard, is excellent. Titled "We Will Become Like Birds". Thirdly, someone brought my attention to Sylvie Lewis (www.sylvielewis.com) and to Madeline Peyroux. Go have a listen - I can assure you it'll be worth it.

Pickathon -- Righteous Babes Headlining Aug 12-13 outside of Portland, OR

Hi there!

My name is Susan aka Quiet Girl and about a dozen other things depending on the situation.

A couple of months ago, I bought two tickets to the 7th Annual Pickathon, which takes place this August 12th-13th on a campground near Portland, OR. Jolie Holland, Freakwater and The Be Good Tanyas are headlining, and there's about 30 other awesome acts, male and female, who are also participating.

The person who was supposed to go with me dropped out all of a sudden, but I still really want to go. I'm looking for someone else to buy one of the tickets and share gas expenses.

Each ticket is $50, and I imagine it will cost around $100 per person for gas. I'm packing my own food, but as far as I know, there will be food available at the venue.

If you're interested, please send me a note on my Tribe mail, and maybe we can meet in SF or Berkeley, depending on where you live, and work out the details.

Changes to this tribe.

Hey there everyone.

As you know this tribe currently has "Moderated Membership" which basically means people have to send a message to me and be approved to join the tribe. I am thinking of changing over to an "Open Membership" arrangement so anyone can join without waiting for me to check my mail and accept them.

I am very interested to know if anyone would object to this change. Or if you have any other thoughts or opinions about it.

Here is why: I am planning to move at the end of the month. Once I move, I will have no access to the internet for an indeterminate amount of time which means I won't be able to login here an approve people who want to join. (Last time I moved it took a month of rescheduling and bitching for the telephone company to actually show up and connect my phone.) By changing to an open membership system, people can join as they wish without having to wait for me to check my messages.

Alternately, I'd be happy to turn over the moderating of this tribe to someone else if anyone is interested. This could be a temporary or permanent arrangement. There isn't much to it except for approving new members.

Anyway, Please let me know what you think. If nobody really cares, I'll just switch to open membership. If someone wants to take over moderating for the time being, please contact me immediately. If nobody cares one way or the other, I'll just switch the tribe to open membership before I move and let things go from there.

Indigo Girls @ Clearwater Festival in Hudson, NY

Hi All,

I just found out that the Indigo Girls are scheduled to play this
year's Clearwater Festival in Hudson, NY. According to the Indigo
Girls website they will be playing on Sunday, June 19. They are not
mentioned anywhere on the Clearwater site yet, but the Sunday schedule does mention "special guests" to perform at the closing ceremony. :-)

Tickets for the festival are $35 for a day ticket (good for either
Saturday or Sunday) or $50 for the weekend before May 31 (members: $30/$45). After that the price goes up to $40/$55 (members: $35/$50) before June 17, and then $45/$60 at the gate.

Sunday night I took one of my younger sisters to see this show. It was excellent, but then I expected nothing less. The show ran about 2- 1/2 hours. Jess Klein (another chick singer who was also very impressive) opened.

The Egg is a spectacular venue to see anyone do anything. If you've never been to it, find an excuse. We had front row seats about the middle of one side of the theatre. I'm guessing it was about 12' to the performers at any given time. Of course, just about every seat in the place is a good one, but I was thrilled to be in the front row. There were maybe 200 people in the audience at most - it felt like a larger than average house concert.

The last time I saw Lisa play live was a free outdoor show in Dallas about 6 or 7 years ago. There were at least a thousand people at that show and she had a full backup band. It was a completely different experience. I think she was supporting the "Firecracker" album at that time. My point is that it was a long time ago, and I haven't been keeping up with her like I should have been. Sunday's show really made me remember how much I like her music and why.

So here is what happened to the best of my recollection. I didn't think to borrow a pen and start writing stuff down until midway through the opening act.

Jess Klein was the opening act. She had a guitarist sideman with her and they played 6 songs. Jess Klein formerly toured with Voices on the Verge which included Beth Amsel, Eric McKeown, and Rose Polenzani. (I didn't know/realize any of this until the show.) Jess Klein's latest solo album is called "Strawberry Lover".
This was what I remember from her set:
1. (I don't remember the name of the song)
2. Shauna Lee - described as a song about a jukebox.
3. Sink My Teeth In
4. Soda Water - really slow and sultry. I really liked it!
5. Strawberry Lover - Title track to her last album.
6. Little White Dove - I think this was the name of the song

She and her sideman did a few guitar solos within the songs and they really rocked on some of them. The others were slow and easy - a good mix. I would definitely go see her again because I'd like to hear more of her stuff. I'd also recommend her to anyone looking for something new to listen to.

There was a quick intermission while they reset the stage. Then Lisa came out with her sideman/guitarist guy - Matt Beck. They played many of the songs from her newest album "the way it really is" and many old favorites and requests.

Somewhere in the beginning of the show she was poking fun at her Texas accent and how 'egg' can be pronounced. I lived in Texas intermittently during college, and I thought the way she could deliberately drop in and out of her accent was fascinating. Anyway, I think that's just me...

6. Everyday - This one she said she wrote with Randy Scruggs
7. What Am I Supposed To Say
8. Hand-Me-Downs

10. When All The Stars Were Falling

14. Would You Wander - Co-wrote with Maia Sharp
15. You Don't Know Me - this song she said was the theme song to her TV show on the Food Network. (I don't have cable so I've never seen it.) She said "...to me it sounds like gnomes walking around." When they got to the chorus, I think she was deliberately singing "gnomey" in place of "know me". I found the whole thing really funny.
16. Furious Rose - Requested by the audience

After this song, she started talking about how she got a copy of a Hall & Oates greatest hits album (Rock & Soul Vol.1?), but it didn't have the song "Rich Girl" on it, which was one of their biggest hits. At this point she started noodling on her guitar trying to play and sing "Rich Girl" which I also though was really funny. She went on to say that she liked playing requests because she liked the audience to go home happy and she didn't want people to feel like they didn't get a chance to hear their favorite songs at the show. A few of the songs were requests from the internet (I don't remember which ones). She wanted to make sure she played some real-life audience requests. Later on in the show, she played "Snow Day" which was yelled out by someone at the same time as Furious Rose.

17. I Wish - at least I thought that was the name of the song, but now I'm not sure. I don't remember.

So that was the show. Afterward, she came out to the lobby and signed autographs, but we didn't stay for that. Again, it was really great I thought.

I bought the new album and listened to it on the way home from the show, and it is really good. If you're a fan, you'll love it. If you're not already a fan, I'd bet you'll still enjoy it. Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?

In the interest of finding out more about everybody and finding out more about singers that I'm not familiar with, I'm asking the question above.

Who's your current favorite chick singer? What do you like most about them? How did you discover them? And so on... You get the idea. (Also feel free, if you'd rather, to write about artists you really like but aren't your "most favorite in the whole wide world")

For me, My current favorite singer is Dar Williams. Close second, if not tied for first, would be The Nields. Now I know you're all thinking "Of course he likes Dar. Doesn't everyone? She gets so much attention! He's just saying that to pick up girls."
But I really do like her. Seriously. The first time I heard Dar was in college - the song was "Southern California Wants to Be Western New York". This was when her album End Of The Summer had just been released. I thought the song was quite clever and accurate. (I grew up in a New York town and culture very similar to what she describes in the song.) So at that point I liked the song, but didn't think twice about it.
It wasn't until a little later, when a fellow DJ at the college station where I worked, who knew my tastes gave me the CD to play as something that might go with my program. Of course he was right. I played a few of the more rockin' tracks, enjoyed them, and kept an eye out for her future albums. Then one day I heard an acoustic version of "Are You Out There" and fell in love with it. I started using it as the opening theme song to the radio show I did. It wasn't until after college that I made the chance to see Dar live in concert. After I did see her, I wondered why I had waited so long because it was one of the most incredible shows I'd ever seen. (the same show also happened to be my first time seeing The Nields and I became immediately hooked on them too.)
Since that time I've been hooked and I'm proud to say that I have all her albums (except for some of the EP's which I'm too lazy to special order.)
I really like the lyrics to her songs and that she's not afraid to sing about not being sure who you are or what you want. I guess the lyrics really resonate with me. I also like that she's not afraid to be funny and cute (such as "The Babysitter's Here") and still she can be serious. I like that some of her songs are like listening to conversations of regular, everday people. I like the way she wonders about life.

I guess that's me. I could continue to write another whole thing about how excellent The Nields are, but I'll leave that for another time.

Dar Williams & Ana Egge - Hamilton College, October 23, 2004

Greetings to all...

This past weekend I went up to Clinton, NY at Hamilton College to see Dar. Ana Egge opened for her. There was also another opening act - Courtney somebody or other whose last name escapes me - she did a very quick, hyper, 4 or 5 song set before Ana and I guess she was a former Hamilton student. She was pretty good I thought, but you could tell she was excited and honored to be opening for Ana and Dar. The show was sponsored by the college activities board and a couple campus women's groups.

It was a fantastic combination and I would encourage anyone in the vicinity of this tour to get out and see them. I'm going to say upfront that Ana was even better than I remember her being. I didn't write down set lists or anything, but here is what I remember her playing in no particular order:

She played at least 2 or 3 other songs, maybe more, I just don't recall the titles or the songs. Unfortunately, there were a few times where there was some feedback and distortion during her singing. It was annoying, but it was a pleasure to see her perform even with the feedback. At the very start, she asked if anyone in the crowd had seen the show in Ithaca the night before. There was one person who shouted out. Then she said that 'for you, I'll try not to play the same songs I played last night.' She encouraged the crowd to join in on Edelweiss, spoke briefly about "Fairest.." being about her sister who is now in California, and talked about camping the night before in Ithaca and how different it was from living in Brooklyn. I think her set ran about 45 minutes, but I wasn't really paying attention - the time just flew by.

Then there was an intermission. Ana was out in the Lobby selling CD's and available for conversation. Unfortunately they only had copies of her album "Mile Marker" available for sale - I bought 2: one for me and one for my sister. I would have bought the others for myself had they been available. (I guess I'll just have to go to Brooklyn at some point and get them.)

After the intermission, Dar came on. She didn't have any issues with feedback or distortion through her whole set. She was amazing as usual. She talked about her past visits to Hamilton College and how the shows related to her life. The first time she was there, she was relatively unknown, and she recalled her disappointment that nobody there really cared that her babysitter moved to Kirkland (about 2 miles outside of Clinton). She talked about how the last time she was there, it was Valentine's Day and she had brought her boyfriend (now husband) with her. Now, this time, she's had her first kid and married and all that. When she finally played "The Babysitter's Here" everybody applauded and cheered, and she paused - delighted at the response - and said that now she'd come full circle, a healing circle, from the very first time she played at Hamilton. (it was a lot more natural to hear from her than to write down here.) Anyway... She didn't say much of anything political except for one quick plug for VotePair.com (or org or whatever). She said something like "Please don't let people in the swing states vote for Nader."
Periodically through the show, during breaks between the songs and such people were shouting out requests. She played a few of them and some others which must have been requested beforehand.

I think she played a few other songs, but I don't remember which ones. If anyone else here was at this show, maybe they can pick up my slack. Dar sang for about 90 minutes plus the encore. Needless to say, it was a great show and I'm glad I made the trip, even though I didn't really know where I was going until I got there. I didn't even talk about the auditorium, but it was amazing and state of the art. The acoustic's were incredible, which made the feedback during Ana's set all the more irritating - she probably could have sung without amplification.

Anyway, If you haven't already, and you like acoustic stuff, you should definitely check out Ana Egge at her website anaegge.net.

P.S. I realized today that I never posted anything about seeing the Cowboy Junkies back in September (on my Birthday!). They were amazing, The Egg in Albany is an incredible venue, and I got Margo's autograph on my CD! Woo-hoo!!! That alone made me happy for about 2 weeks after. Ah well, there will be more concerts in the future...

I feel compelled to mention the untimely passing of Laura Branigan on Thursday the 26th. I can't say I was ever a fan of her music, but I'm certain she was/is an influence on many of the artists discussed here. I just heard about this new compilation album of "...the best contemporary female musicians." I guess it's a benefit album for something or other. Has anyone else heard about this? Is it any good? If it's good, any ideas where one can get a copy of it.

rockin' girls on my radio

So I hopped in my car after work today and heard Neko Case followed by Rylo Kiley on the radio on my favorite local college station. From there it got even better. It turns out the program I was listening to will be running for the entire summer, every monday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30pm eastern time.
You can listen in too by tuning your radio to 91.3 WVKR in the greater Poughkeepsie,NY area or by visiting wvkr.org on the internet and catching the live streaming audio. The show is devoted solely to girls and girl bands that rock and the girl who does the show sounds like she knows her music.

So now I've got this Rylo Kiley (any spelling suggestions?) song in my head and it's great! I'm hooked. Anyone a fan out there who can tell me more about her/them?

So I went to this show. It was great. No band, just Nerissa & Katryna with one guitar and promoting the latest album "This Town Is Wrong". The setlist (with some commentary)follows.

I was surprised to find out that their Aunt & Uncle for whom the song was written live(d) in Gilbertsville, NY. I grew up in a town near Gilbertsville which, if you know any NY State geography, is in the unpopulated part. So it was a surprise to learn that relatives of "famous people" live there. Mostly b/c very few people live there.

Then up front where the altar used to be is the performance stage. Seating is in folding chairs & tables that can be moved around or out as necessary. It was a very interesting place.****

Here they told a story of their family vacation to the British Isles as teens where they didn't get to go to Liverpool. As Beatles fans, they were quite upset by this. It all fit in with the "letting your kids show you new things" theme of the song. They sang "It's not the leaving of Liverpool that makes *me sad, but that we never went in the First Place!!!"

Without mics or amp and 'in the room' instead of onstage. It was very beautiful.

Done a capella. This was introduced as a song they learned as kids. It's a very old spring song. Arguably the most beautiful singing of the night was them doing this song.

That was it for the show. Well worth the drive. I'd definitely go to this place again to see any artist. Great acoustics, sound, and friendly people. One final fun fact - Clinton, NY is the home of Hamilton College (in case you are looking).

What follows is what I could remember of the setlist for the 7pm show. (There was also a 9pm show.) I'm pretty sure I've got all the songs they did, but it is probably out of order. (Many thanks to Michelle for helping piece this together the day after.) Commentary follows.

As you might guess, I thought the show was awesome. Made even better by 'The Crackerjack Band' which included:
Dave Chalfant on guitars & dobro
Dave Hower on percussion
Gordon Stone on pedal steel (He only did 2 or 3 songs)
Paul Kochanski(?) on bass

We had the unexpected pleasure of sitting dead center of the stage toward the back, directly behind the table reserved for the Nields Family. (Mom & Dad Nields were right in front of us which I thought was kind of cool.) The place was packed - standing room only. The doors were to open at 5:30 and when we got there at 5:20, there was already a huge line waiting to get in. It was all good though.

Now, on with the inter-song repartee...
Best Black Dress was introduced as "This is for Sara. Sorry." I suspect that only Sara know's why. Then Nerissa went on to explain the new album and the story behind it and the book that accompanies it. (The book is supposed to be out next year.) They sang the 'new version' of This Town Is Wrong.
Before Clairman Town, they asked and answered the question of Which town is wrong. In this case it was Clairman Town, a place where all the houses are white with green shutters and all the dogs are golden retrievers. If you paint your house something other than white & green, people from the town come in the night and repaint your house and in the morning they give you the bill. Although, they did just pass an ordinance which allows a resident, with special paperwork and approved variances to have a Yellow Labrador instead of a Golden Retriever. Anyway, they said the town which is "right" is called Jintucket where all the houses are multicolored and all the dogs are mutts. In Jintucket there's even a pet store solely devoted to raising mutts called "MuttsRUs" They talked a little about the mutts and Katryna suggested a few mixes including 'a collie and a charpee' which would have a long, wrinkled nose. K was delighted with the idea and N suggested she go into business and open her own mutt store. (There was more I don't remember, but it was very funny.) So they sang Clairman Town and Closet. In between there was more explanation of the history and mythology behind the new album. At one point they said something like "Between 8th & 9th grade, All is dire. People who say junior high is the worst and life is not like that are lying! Life is just like junior high."
Closet also brought out K's political side a little. She said she was proud to be citizen of Massachusettes and had never before been as proud to be a citizen of anything. A song for everyone and their respective closets.

The intro to The Day I let Glory Steer was about how they saw a father & daughter coming out of show together while on tour with Dar Williams. They thought it was cool that the parent & child were able to bond through music. This is what inspired the song. N asked "Who's here with their parents? Raise your hands. I am. Thanks to my parents for giving us the gift of music." She also encouraged everyone in the audience to do the same. Share music with your kids (or future kids).

The Glow in the dark Plastic Angel is something that N keeps on her computer to prevent it from crashing. It was given to her by a friend who had lost patience with coming over every 5 minutes to fix something. The Angel is like an emissary from the computer expert and keeps things working smoothly. At least up until last week when the 1 yr warranty ran out on the computer. K said she had one of the angels in her car and her car hasn't crashed so it works. It also works miraculously to quiet crying children in the backseat. The angels were available for sale after the show on the CD table.

For Haven't I Been Good, N talked about how she was raised Presbyterian and went to a plain white church with everything white including the pews. The Presbyterians talk about three people only, God, Jesus and occasionally, the Holy Spirit. She's not a Catholic, even though she plays them sometimes in her songs. She said recently that she'd been attending a Catholic church & likes it better because they have a whole cast of characters with Mary, The Saints and all that. She said her 2nd favorite Saint is St. Anthony. He helps you find things that are lost if you spin around 3 times and say his name 3 times and ask for what you can't find, you will find what you have lost within the hour. For example: St. Anthony - Where is my... remote control? Her favorite Saint though is St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of difficult cases. One day she found herself in a campus Newman (Catholic) center with things were going bad and thought praying might help. So she went to the chapel which was to St. Jude and realized that this was right where she should be. K was able to readily affirm that N was a "difficult case".

This Is The Work That We Do is a song that N was asked to write about her Uncle for his funeral. She said to her aunt at the time that "I really don't know what to say." Her Aunt said "Yes you do." So she asked her uncle. Her uncle said "Just tell the story of us."

At one point during the show, N & K talked about listening to a recent recording of a show and laughing hysterically at themselves, but realizing that the audience wasn't really laughing with them. This led to the 'Airport Story' which was the intro to When I'm Here. They were on a whirlwind tour of the midwest and on the way back found themselves stuck in Chicago. All flights in & out were cancelled indefinitely. K passed the time by buying a reading a novel - the first non-parenting book she's read since her daughter was born. She also read half a dozen magazines. The got on the plane finally, and between them sat down a guitar salesman. K wanted nothing to do with him, but N actively engaged him in a lively discussion about guitars. Now, buddhism says there are 3 primary types of people, Greedy, Aversive, and Delusional. Everyone has components of all but everyone is also primarily one of those things. N is greedy. K is aversive. All the guys in the band are delusional. So N is talking up the guitar salesman about getting another guitar. K says to N, "No!!! You don't need another guitar. You've got 6 already! You can't afford another Gibson. You're being greedy" etc.etc. and talks N out of the guitar. As they're walking out of the airport at the end of the trip, they walk past a woman stranger and N stops suddenly and says to the stranger "I love that sweater! I want it! Where'd you get that sweater?!" When I'm Here was described as a "Zen Buddhist Blues".

At one point an audience member shouted out "Play Mr. Right Now." to which they replied - "That's going to be in the second set. We're greedy and want you to come to both shows." They also asked everyone to sing along on The Sweetness.

They came out for two encores. The first one, Check It Out, was the whole band on stage and extremely passionate & intense. K briefly suggested that we 'don't bury our heads in the sand' and 'we get out there and take back this country'. For Snowman, N & K walked through the crowd and up the stairs to the balcony where they stood at the top of the steps and performed without amplification of any sort. Everyone was quiet and the place has great acoustics, so even without microphones, you could hear perfectly. It was really excellent.

They talked more about some other things I don't remember, including the sound guy, the anniversary of the Iron Horse, and the book and new album. Suffice it to say the show was excellent. Everything I've come to expect and more. I'm looking forward to seeing them again at some point this year and I would encourage anyone who's curious to see them. That's it.

"Hey, I'm with the band..." yeah right.

I'm forming theoretical grandiose plans which probably won't come to anything. Said plans involve the Nields and Northampton. I'm still in the early consideration stage of things which mostly involves thinking about how it would be cool if I could...

While assembling the tour schedule last week I saw the Nields are playing 4 shows within a reasonable driving distance of my apartment. Wouldn't it be cool if I could go see all of them?!) More importantly (perhaps), they are touring in support of the new album (just released Jan 13, 2004) and have some dates with the full band. So the idea is to drive to Northampton and get tix to both Iron Horse shows in March with the band and just spend the whole night. Two shows in a row WITH the full band(Wouldn't that be cool?!)(Looking again at the schedule maybe I could get there the night before and see Jonatha Brooke and Bitch & Animal. That would rock!) This would be motel overnight and *lots* of driving for one weekend.

So then, the other 2 shows I could see would be in Albany and Clinton (NY). Woo-hoo!!! Neither show is with the full band though. I guess the point is that I haven't seen them with the full band in years (literally) and I'd really like to. (Would 4 shows in 2 months make me an honorary roadie? Didn't think so.)

Anyway, just thought I'd share what's on my mind. I don't know what to do yet, but I'm sure I'll let you know (whether you want to or not) as things happen. (Wouldn't that be cool though?) (Maybe I'll just go see Nanci Griffith in Albany too (or instead). hmmm.)
