In the interest of finding out more about everybody and finding out more about singers that I'm not familiar with, I'm asking the question above.
Who's your current favorite chick singer? What do you like most about them? How did you discover them? And so on... You get the idea. (Also feel free, if you'd rather, to write about artists you really like but aren't your "most favorite in the whole wide world")
For me, My current favorite singer is Dar Williams. Close second, if not tied for first, would be The Nields. Now I know you're all thinking "Of course he likes Dar. Doesn't everyone? She gets so much attention! He's just saying that to pick up girls."
But I really do like her. Seriously. The first time I heard Dar was in college - the song was "Southern California Wants to Be Western New York". This was when her album End Of The Summer had just been released. I thought the song was quite clever and accurate. (I grew up in a New York town and culture very similar to what she describes in the song.) So at that point I liked the song, but didn't think twice about it.
It wasn't until a little later, when a fellow DJ at the college station where I worked, who knew my tastes gave me the CD to play as something that might go with my program. Of course he was right. I played a few of the more rockin' tracks, enjoyed them, and kept an eye out for her future albums. Then one day I heard an acoustic version of "Are You Out There" and fell in love with it. I started using it as the opening theme song to the radio show I did. It wasn't until after college that I made the chance to see Dar live in concert. After I did see her, I wondered why I had waited so long because it was one of the most incredible shows I'd ever seen. (the same show also happened to be my first time seeing The Nields and I became immediately hooked on them too.)
Since that time I've been hooked and I'm proud to say that I have all her albums (except for some of the EP's which I'm too lazy to special order.)
I really like the lyrics to her songs and that she's not afraid to sing about not being sure who you are or what you want. I guess the lyrics really resonate with me. I also like that she's not afraid to be funny and cute (such as "The Babysitter's Here") and still she can be serious. I like that some of her songs are like listening to conversations of regular, everday people. I like the way she wonders about life.
I guess that's me. I could continue to write another whole thing about how excellent The Nields are, but I'll leave that for another time.
Now it's your turn. Go ahead and jump in anytime...

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Mon, February 23, 2004 - 6:55 PMMy longest running favorite is Aimee Mann. Her album "Lost in Space" has gotten near-constant play in my house or car, but I also think "Bachelor No. 2" is excellent. My favorite from her 'Til Tuesday days is "Everything's Different Now." In a similar vein I consider Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn..." as one the best modern albums, with a truly perfect song cycle.
The other person on my mind is Jonatha Brooke, mainly because her new album gets released tomorrow. She's probably the one I've seen in concert the most - I think around seven or eight times.
I'm also a fan of Dar Williams, but tend to like her earlier stuff because it reminds me of my quasi hippie college.
And the one who will always have a special spot in my heart is Sam Phillips. Again, I prefer her earlier stuff from "The Indescribable Wow" and "Cruel Inventions" but think whatever she's done has at least been interesting if not great.
The list could go on. I tend to like predominantly female musicians. Does it help me pick up chicks? Not in my experience, but I'm enjoying great music all the time!

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Tue, May 11, 2004 - 12:56 PMI think I may be more of an indie grrrl singer fan, due to my personal feeling that once you add a band to a "chick" and then overproduce an album you have a "band". That being said I will now contradict myself by announcing my favorite chick singer being The Softies (who are in fact 2 chicks with guitars yet no band, so I'm still at least 1/2 true to form).
The reason why might seem monotonous at first but their 5 albums have a very similar sound, ethic, and cadence which allows a day of uninterrupted play. It would be like putting on the Smiths for a day - you never get hit with their country album 1/2 way through the day. The production quality is clean and true to their vision. Post recording no cowbell, or thunderstorm were added. Its the same sound you would expect if you sat in a coffee shop for a day with them playing (sans idiots ordering technical coffee beverages and dishes being done).
The second reason is the angry sprite-like energy they describe the nonsense, the pain, and the positive aspects of relationships. This too is very Smith(ish) but raw, charged, and most importantly not overproduced.

Tue, May 11, 2004 - 5:03 PMfirst of all, hi. this is my first post to this group.
i have to apologize for being out of the loop...i am housebound for the most part, so i really only get exposed to main stream stuff...haven't been to any kind of music store for about two years or so.
in any case, my current favorite is the lead for Portishead, but i don't know her name. -

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Tue, June 15, 2004 - 9:59 AMAimee Mann is also my favorite. I love everything about her music. Sometimes I like a musician/artist because they are really strong in one aspect or another of their music, such as lyrics, voice, music, etc. Often I find musicians who are strong in lyrics, but weak in voice. Or great in voice but weak in lyrics. Doesn't stop me from loving them.
But...Aimee Mann's got it all. Her lyrics have real honesty, depth, and psychological awareness. You know that she is speaking from experience. I resonate with her lyrics, and that's probably why I like them so much. It's a personal identification. Her voice...aahh...she could sing anything and put a smile on my face. Her music is interesting, innovative, and eclectic. She's great at both upbeat tunes and ballads. I could probably go on and on...if you haven't heard a lot of her music, GET TO IT! -

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Wed, June 16, 2004 - 8:28 AMIf I have one criticism of Aimee Mann it's her live on-air performances. I've been to a few of her concerts and they've been good, but something about when she performs live on TV or radio she seems to struggle with her pitch. Maybe at concerts it's so damned loud it's hard to discern? I'm still a huge fan, but prefer to stick to her studio stuff.
As an update to my previous post, Jonatha Brooke and Sam Phillips have both released new albums. Both great. A new person on the scene I've been enjoying is Nellie McKay - kooky as all get out, but definitely talented. And I just picked up the North American release of the Cardigan's latest. The first song "Communication" was an instant addition to the melancholia compilation I've been working on.

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Fri, July 2, 2004 - 1:42 PMAllison Moyet. Allison Moyet. Allison Moyet. and when I get tired of her, I listen to Allison Moyet. Hoo Doo is in my top-5-favorite-albums-ever list. She's an amazingly powerful vocalist. I'm very sad I did not get to see her in the London re-vamp of Chicago. I bet she brought the house down.
A new-to-me lady I'm really enjoying is part of a bluegrassy/country duet Carrie Rodriguez- she sings with Chip Taylor. A warm and very flirty almost 1940's sound.
Annie Lennox is someone I also enjoy alot, however she's gotten pretty dark on her last album. Cassandra Willson is just like silk in candlelight, love her.
A bit tame, I sappose, to some of the others artists listed, but some powerful ladies non the less.

Re: Who's YOUR current favorite Chick Singer(s) and Why?
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 9:37 PMmy favorite? Just one? How about a top 10... (in no particular order)
after each name will be my current favorite song (if i have one) in parentheses...
Veruca Salt (Volcano Girls)
Poe (drive-by-a-go-go)
Vanessa Carlton
Meri St. Meri (local San Francisco) (L.A.Lay)
Joan Osborne (The Ladder)
Norah Jones (Cold, Cold Heart)
Diamanda Galas
Jewel (Serve The Ego)
Dar Williams (Iowa)
Ani Di Franco (Shy)
Each of these artists has a unique approach to music. Thier personality is exuded from thier songs. Each makes you feel...
Tomorrow, or next week, I'll have a different top 10. My favorites match my moods.
That's what I always look for. It's great that there is a tribe to study the often overlooked talent of women in a male dominated music industry. Thanks -
